The Redskins took on non-conference foe Lebanon on Saturday night as the coaches and administration celebrated the 12 seniors on the roster on Senior Night. After a tense conference clinching game on Thursday and the pre-game recognition it would be interesting to see how the boys came out after the opening whistle. Coach Jones featured an all senior starting lineup with a throwback included as Alec Polster started as the target man for the Redskins! Anderson answered any questions about game readiness as they came flying out of the gate with real energy and purpose to put the Warriors on their heels. Jack Vogele hit a screamer just over the goal in the first 2 minutes and Patrick Dames followed that up with a low hard shot that was 6 inches outside the left post. Jack saw a header go just over and Brodie Sallows shot just went just over the top as the Skins kept up the pressure. With 9 minutes left in the half Anderson put the first one of the evening in the back of the net. Sam Kunkemoeller sent a great service in from a corner kick and Matt Fickenworth did the rest as he rose above the defenders to hammer a header into the upper 90 to make it 1-0. There was almost a moment of magic towards the end of the half as Ryan Kelley put a great service into the box and big brother Elliot got a header on frame only to see the Lebanon keeper make a nice save. At the half the Redskins had the lead at 1-0.
More of the same in the second half for Anderson as they quickly put the pressure on Lebanon from the opening kickoff. Just a minute had elapsed when Patrick found a cutting Brevin with a perfectly weighted ball in between their center backs and Brev finished smartly with a first time shot into the lower left hand corner to make it 2-0. Patrick was at the center of the action again 5 minutes later when he picked up a loose ball at midfield and found himself in acres of space. He went wide to his right to a streaking Jack and Jack returned the favor with a great pass back and Patrick slotted it home to make it 3-0. There would be no let up for the Skins as the entire roster was able to see plenty of action and the boys got their reward when Max Rothfuss came up from his right back positon and hit a well-placed driven ball to the penalty spot and Jason Moore hit a beautifully placed header to open up a 4-0 lead. The last goal of the night came as the result of a penalty kick and Sam calmly placed it in the lower left hand corner to make it a 5-0 final. Billy Southard, Alec Polster and a special appearance by Joey Archer in the nets preserved the shutout. The last regular season game of the year is Thursday, 10/12 against the Kings Knights as the Redskins try to achieve a perfect 7-0 record in the ECC.
Editorial note – we are parents of one of this year’s Seniors and would like to thank all of the soccer parents, the coaching staff and the administration for making this a truly memorable night. I have also had the privilege of helping to coach at one point 10 of these boys at the club level, some of them since they were on the U-9 team! Special thanks to Keith Polster who allowed me to hang out on the sidelines with him for all of those years and worked so hard to help put them in a position to succeed at the high school level. I can tell you from experience that this is a group of excellent young men; talented and hardworking both on and off the field. As Chris Newton said on Saturday this group has really achieved so much and helped to revitalize and re-establish this program. They have set the bar high athletically and academically and they have given their parents and the school so many memorable moments. Special shout out to the parents who have been through the ups and downs with the boys, not to mention the hot and cold (hello Snow Bowl game!), and the travel –from Rockford, Illinois to Raleigh, North Carolina and everywhere in between - so many great memories with such great people. Best of luck to these young men in the future, can’t wait to see what they achieve next.
