GAME SUMMARY

Anderson travelled across the river to take on the # 1 ranked team in Northern Kentucky on Tuesday, 9/19. The Covington Catholic Colonels dealt the Redskins one of their 2 regular season losses in 2016 so this rematch promised to be an exciting one. The Skins came out firing on all cylinders and put Cov Cath on notice as they created 2 good chances in the first 5 minutes of the game. The first came about when Brodie Sallows slipped past his defender on the left wing and played a ball into Patrick Dames but Patrick’s 20 yard effort went just high past the upper left hand corner. Patrick and Brodie combined again after a nice diagonal ball from Mike Oetgen found Brodie and he fed Patrick only to see that shot slip just right of the frame. Great start for the boys and there was more to come as some nice build up play from the back saw Brevin hit a streaking Sam Kunkmoeller on a through ball but the Cov Cath keeper came up big to keep it scoreless after 14 minutes.Surprisingly it was the Colonels that opened up the scoring in the game when they crossed a ball in from the right hand side and their striker got a head to the ball and deflected it off an Anderson defender. The redirection froze Billy in his tracks as it went in the right hand corner. The Skins were really unlucky to be down a goal at this point. Anderson continued to press and look for the equalizer and found it with 14 minutes left in the half as the result of some excellent build up play. Brevin gathered a loose ball at midfield and very smartly split 2 defenders with a pass to Elliot who in turn found Jack Vogele streaking down the right hand side and Jack played a beautiful ball across the face of the goal to Joey Buscani who slammed it home to even up the match. Anderson responds very well and the half ended at 1-1.

Both teams came out swinging to start the second half and it looked like we may see a number of goals to close out the contest. Cov Cath won a free kick from 20 yards out and Anderson fans held their breath as the ball skimmed just right of the post. Billy Southard came up huge a few minutes later when he stopped a close range shot and then quickly reacted to the follow up shot with a tip over the top of the crossbar; big time saves to keep us in the game. We went back on the attack and really put some pressure on the Cov Cath defenders with a number of chances in the next 10 minutes. Brevin took a nice pass from Sam out on the right flank and drove a ball right across the face of the goal and Patrick missed a sliding effort by a few inches. Brodie went in 1:1 after a another good pass from Sam but the Cov Cath keeper was up to the task. Joey did some great work on the left flank to break in but once again the Colonels goalie came up with a huge save, he was terrific all game. With just 11 minutes left in the game the Redskins found the game winning combination they were looking for. Ryan Kelley sent a throw in to the near post and Brodie flicked it to the back post and in came Ryan Seither-Howard to slam in a game winning header into the left corner. From there the Redskins played some strong organized defense and managed the game to the finish line. The back line of Adam Greer, Matt Fickenworth, Kyle Willams, Kirk Mendoza and Ryan Kelley have been rock solid all season long. Combine that with strong goalkeeping from Billy Southard and Alec Polster and the Redskins are a difficult team to play against. Hats off to both teams for a really well played match, there was plenty of talent all over the field and the fans certainly got their money's worth! Up next for Anderson is a key ECC match up against Loveland.
