The Redskins travelled down Beechmont Avenue to take on neighborhood rival McNick in the first leg of their King of the Hill series on Saturday, 9/16. Anderson was bringing a 5 game win streak into the match while outscoring their opponents 29-4 in the process. The Rockets were up to the task though as they started out well and defended in an organized fashion to start the game. We won 2 corner kicks in quick succession in the 7thand 8th minute. The second one worked out well for the Skins when Sam Kunkemoeller whipped in the kick and Mike Oetgen beat his defender to get a piece of it and knock it in to score his first goal of the season and give us a 1-0 lead. The Skins continued to press and create more chances as Brodie Sallows received a nice pass from Brevin Andreadis and fired off a shot and 2 minutes later cracked another one, only to see the Rockets keeper come up with 2 fine saves. McNick bounced back with a chance of their own in the 20th minute when they crossed a set piece to the back post and got foot on it only to see it bounce off the crossbar. We had a few more good chances as Patrick Dames fired a shot wide right and Elliot Kelly combined with Ryan Seither-Howard to drive the end line and cross it to Joey Buscani but Joey’s shot slid wide left. The Redskins go in to the half with a 1-0 lead.
The boys didn’t take long to turn up the heat and pressure the Rockets in the second half. Just 5 minutes in Sam found Jack Vogele at the back post but his glancing header went just wide right. Brodie cracked a shot just to the right of the post a few minutes later. Patrick sent Sam in 1 vs. 1 on the keeper with nice little back heel but the McNick keeper came up with a big save. It would be McNick who got on the scoreboard next when they converted a PK 23 minutes into the half to level the game at 1-1. Billy Southard did well to get a hand to it but couldn't quite prevent the equalizer. Anderson went on the offensive quickly as Sam hit a shot just wide a few minutes later and Patrick saw his free kick from 22 yards out saved by the Rockets keeper. We got the breakthrough we needed with 7 minutes left when Brevin won a contested goal kick and went streaking past 2 defenders down the center of the field. He slipped a pass to Jack Vogele on his right and Jack made no mistake as he took a set up touch and smacked the game winner into the left hand corner. Solid defending and good game management saw the Redskins move to 8-1 on the season. Next up for Anderson is an away game against Covington Catholic on Tuesday, 9/20 at 7:30.
