Boys Varsity Soccer vs. Turpin HS School

Game Date
Sep 28, 2017
Score
REDSKINS: 1
TURPIN HIGH SCHOOL: 0

A crucial ECC battle and township bragging rights were on the line as the Turpin Spartans traveled to Brown Stadium on a perfect evening for soccer on Thursday, 9/28. Plenty of fans for both teams packed the stands and of course there was a huge enthusiastic student section from each school to help create another fantastic atmosphere for the contest. The Anderson boys added to the electricity in the air when they emerged from the locker just 5 minutes before kickoff in a brand new never before seen game jersey! Not much to report for the first 10 minutes of the game as both teams tried to settle into the match and find their rhythm. Sam Kunkemoeller had the first real shot on goal in the 11th minute but the Turpin keeper had it covered. 17 minutes in the Redskins created a nice chance when Patrick Dames found Jack Vogele on the right flank, Jack did well to get past his defender and fired in a nice service that Brodie Sallows got on the end of but his effort from 12 yards out went just right of the post. We had a few more chances in the half as Brevin Andreadis saw his long range effort drift over the crossbar and Elliot Kelley’s shot was saved comfortably. A tense half came to an end with no score as both teams searched for answers to unlock the other’s defense.

The second half saw the Redskins get off to a good start and generate a flurry of chances in the first 10 minutes. Sam and Jack were the catalysts for most of the action as they combined to threaten the Spartans goal but none of their efforts troubled Turpin’s keeper. The game settled into a familiar pattern as the Redskins had the edge in possession but lacked the results in the final third. Kirk Mendoza came up from his left back spot to serve an excellent ball to the far post but Jack’s header couldn’t quite find the target in the 68th minute. Anxious Redskin fans would have to wait until less than 3 minutes remained before they finally got their reward. Anderson won a free kick right at half field and Mike Oetgen stepped up and sent a dangerous ball in towards the Spartan penalty spot. Patrick went up strong to contest the header but the Turpin keeper did well to get a hand on it and knock it away. Fortunately for Anderson the ball fell to the feet of Brodie and he made no mistake as he slammed home the game winner with 2:30 left on the clock! The Redskins managed the game from there and came away with their second straight thrilling 1-0 win over Turpin. Key to the victory was of course great teamwork and a strong, organized defensive unit led by Mike Oetgen, Kirk Mendoza, Adam Greer and the center back pairing of Kyle Williams and Matt Fickenworth.  Billy Southard gets the shutout after a steady performance in goal. Quick mention of Elliot Kelley doing what he does best – playing center mid, striker and left back all in the same half and not even blinking – well done. We should also tip our hats to the visiting Spartans for a well-played, spirited match and an excellent display of sportsmanship. Both teams lingered well after the game to talk with and congratulate each other as most of these young men grew up playing with or against each other on club teams in their younger days. Great stuff and very much appreciated by the fans. Next up for Anderson is another important ECC game as they travel to Walnut Hills to take on the Eagles on Thursday, October 5th at 7:00PM. Go Skins!
