Round 3 of the postseason saw the Redskins travel to Lakota West High School to take on the Sycamore Aviators with the winner advancing to the District Final game on Saturday, 10/28. After 2 uneventful 9-0 victories in the earlier rounds Anderson fans were eager to see how the team would respond against a high quality side like Sycamore. Supporters from both sides got their answer in a hurry as both teams came out swinging and set the tone for the evening. Anderson got an early edge on possession and created the first real chances of the night in the first 10 minutes but couldn’t break through the Aviators defense. Sycamore came roaring back with some nice build up from the back and then a ball slotted behind our back four that their target man latched onto and fired a shot on goal. Billy Southard did well to get a hand on it but it sat up in front of the goal and the follow up from an Aves streaking midfielder was smashed into the back of the net. Barely 10 minutes into the game and suddenly we were down 1-0. The Redskins responded well and 10 minutes later they were rewarded with a score of their own. Nice build up through the midfield found the ball at the feet of Brodie Sallows who knocked it out wide to Jack Vogele on the right. Jack found a trailing Elliot Kelley and E did the rest with an excellent finish into the lower right corner and just like that we were back on level terms. We managed a few more chances as both Patrick and Sam K hit long range shots wide right but the half would end at 1-1.
The second half was much of the same as both teams slugged it out in between the penalty boxes and tried to impose their will on the other. Sycamore enjoyed a slight possession advantage in the middle of the half and Billy came up big with a few quality saves to keep the Aviators off the board. Anderson came right back and looked threatening in the last 15 minutes of the half. With 14 minutes left the Redskins got the breakthrough they were looking for. Patrick received a ball in the attacking third and spun his defender and drove the end line. He spotted a streaking Brodie near the penalty spot and hit him with the entry pass and Brodie made no mistake as he smacked it into the back of the net. The rest of the game was nerve racking for the Redskin faithful as the Aviators threw men forward in an attempt to get the equalizer. But Anderson was up to the task as they played smart and stayed organized in defense. The Redskins even managed to score another goal as time expired when Brodie hit a long range shot past the Sycamore keeper who had came way up the field. However apparently time had expired? Hats off to the back four of Greer, Fickenworth, Williams, Mendoza, and Kelley plus Mike Oetgen doing a great job in the holding midfielder role. They were terrific in neutralizing a very talented Sycamore attack. A great team win and a great high school soccer game. Up next for Anderson is a district final game against Dayton Carroll on Saturday, 10/28 at Lakota West High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00PM. Let's Go Skins!
