The second game of the season would prove to be a tremendous battle as the Redskins were up against the # 4 ranked St. Xavier Bombers in a highly anticipated early season match up. St. X started well and won the possession battle early but the Redskins struck first on the scoreboard. Only 5 minutes into the half we won a free kick 35 yards out on the left flank. Sam Kunkemoeller sent a ball to the back post and Jack Vogele beat his man to the spot to knock a volley past the keeper and make it 1-0. The Bombers responded with a few long range shots but nothing to trouble Billy Southard in goal. The boys would respond with an excellent counterattack as Mike Oetgen threaded a ball to Sam who found Jack streaking down the right side. Jack slipped it into to Brevin who made no mistake as he cracked an excellent shot into the upper right corner. Just 17 minutes in and the Skins were up 2-0. Again St. X came at us as they hit a blistering long range shot that Billy palmed to his left but the Bombers couldn't capitalize on the rebound. Anderson heads into the locker with a 2-0 halftime lead.
The second half resembled much of the first as St. X enjoyed the possession advantage but Anderson remained organized defensively and effectively counterattacked. We generated a few chances as Sam hit a shot just wide left and Brodie did well to get past 2 defenders into the box but he couldn't quite pull the trigger on a shot. St. X had chances too as they hit a shot wide left and a header over in the span of 5 minutes. Anderson fans would really have to hang on as the last 2 minutes of the game proved to be chaotic! First the Bombers won a penalty kick on a handball and buried it to make it 2-1 just under the 2 minute mark. Just 20 seconds later they stormed down the field and buried what looked like the equalizer only to see it called it back for offsides. Still more anxiety for Skins fans as we gave away a dangerous free kick within 25 yards but we were able to clear. Unfortunately the ball went to X for a throw in. The long throw was effective as it was headed towards goal only to see Billy tip the ball over the top and preserve the win with 2 seconds left in the game! Amazing save and finish to a tremendous soccer game. Hats off to both teams for a high quality match. Up next for Anderson is their first away game as they take on the # 6 Moeller Crusaders at Moeller on Saturday, 8/26 with a 5:00
