The Redskin Men's soccer team opened the season at home against Middletown with plenty of expectations. The boys were coming off a 2016 campaign that saw them reach the final 16 in the state and were returning 7 players who earned all ECC honors including the reigning ECC player of the year. The boys had endured a rigorous preseason schedule against such high quality teams as Mason, Summit Country Day, Lakota West and East, Sycamore and Fairfield. Great preparation for the upcoming regular season. There was a large enthusiastic crowd on hand for a rare night game, including the Redskins cheerleading squad and new principal Mr. Fellows leading the crowd in the "roller coaster", great stuff!
As for the game itself the Skins got off to a dream start when Sam Kunkemoeller slipped a ball wide to Joey Buscani on the left and he quickly served it to Elliot Kelley who calmly finished to make it 1-0 after just 34 seconds. The boys kept up the pressure and made it 2-0 when Jack Vogele pounced on a loose ball and spotted Joey streaking in from the left wing and he cracked home his first goal of the season and we had doubled the lead after just 6 minutes. Sophomore Brevin Andreadis made it 3-0 when went in 1:1 on the keeper and calmly finished. There was more to come as Sam added to his assist total with a thru ball to newcomer Brodie Sallows who also beat the keeper to make it 4-0. Brodie gets an assist too as feeds Joey for his second goal of the half just 18 seconds before the halftime whistle.
There was more scoring to come on the second half as Billy Straub got his first goal of the season when he jumped on an errant pass back to the keeper and went past him to finish it off and make it 6-0 after 10 minutes. Ryan Seither-Howard was up next after some good interplay between Jack and Jason Moore led to Ryan collecting the ball and then beating the keeper with nice shot to the upper left corner. Joey added to his total with another assist from Sam and Jack tallied the last goal of the evening with a fine pass from Brodie to make the final score 9-0. Billy Southard and Alec Polster combined for the first clean sheet of the season. Great overall team effort and a great chance for a lot of players to get on the field. Next up for the boys is another home match as they take on St. Xavier on .
